Lort Smith acknowledged for Innovation in Rescue award

Lort Smith is thrilled to be named as a finalist in the Innovation in Rescue category of Jetpets Companion Animal Rescue Awards 2019! This national program showcases excellence and innovation in rescue and this year received more than 1,000 entries!

Lort Smith partnered with Pets Of The Homeless Australia and Launch Housing to develop a program to assist people in crisis situations such as homelessness.

Pets play an important role in the mental health and general wellbeing of their carers, especially when experiencing crisis. Often the pet is their only companion. Our joint aim is to keep people and their pets together through times of hardship.

So together with Pets of the Homeless and Launch Housing, we developed a program whereby dogs, cats and even pocket pets are vet checked, desexed, vaccinated and given any essential veterinary treatment required. And if we assess their behaviour and believe they would be able to stay with their carer in crisis accommodation they do, otherwise a foster carer is found for them and the animal is placed temporarily in a home environment.
