In addition to normal consulting services for appointments and emergencies, the Lort Smith Animal Hospital offers the following services.

Exotic, Pocket Pets and Native Animals

Dr Sasha Herbert has worked in Australia and overseas at leading zoos and wildlife sanctuaries. Having gained experience in treating a wide variety of animals, ranging from frogs to tigers, she is available for consultations at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital for treating rats, mice, ferrets, rabbits, birds, fish, reptiles and Australian native animals. A dedicated ward is available where these animals can rest and be treated in a quiet and safe environment.

In House Pathology Services

The Lort Smith Animal Hospital uses the latest biotechnical equipment for evaluating blood pathology. Where as blood sent to an external company for evaluation usually takes 24 hours for a result to be returned, our in house blood analysis machine can return a full blood result in less than 15 minutes, saving critical time and allowing us to treat your pet more efficiently.

Endoscopy and Ultrasonography

X-rays can only show so much, they are most useful at looking at broken bones but are not able to provide a clear picture of "soft tissue" diseases such as cancer. Ultrasounds use high frequency sound to look at damage and disease in soft tissue and can give a very clear understanding of these problems. An endoscope is a flexible tube fitted with a small camera that can be used to examine the gastro-intestinal tract where vets would normally require invasive surgery to examine. Both of these services are available at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital through our medical consultant, Dr Harold Pook.

Orthopedic Surgery

The hospital offers a wide range of orthopedic procedures. If a patient is diagnosed with a broken limb a variety of repair options are available, ranging from pinning and plating to external fixation. Other corrective procedures are also available, such as cruciate ligament repair, knee reconstruction (luxating patella) and pelvic plating. These procedures are performed on a daily basis by experienced veterinary surgeons.

Dedicated Intensive Care Unit

Providing care for up to 20 patients, the intensive care unit is staffed with dedicated nurses who monitor and tend the hospitals sickest animals. Equipped with oxygen tents, humidicribs, respirators, ECG's and other emergency equipment, the ICU is able to deal with almost any emergency case. Constant checking of patients alerts us to the slightest change in an animal's condition, and provide critical treatment and care.

Emergency Service

Every day of the year the Lort Smith Animal Hospital is equipped to accept and treat emergency cases between 8:30AM and midnight . Emergency staff are always on hand to treat any emergency from car accidents, dog attacks, poisonings and critically ill patients.

Working closely with ICU staff, animals can be admitted, treated and monitored.

Ambulance Service

The hospital provides an ambulance service to owners who are otherwise unable to bring their pet into the hospital for treatment. The ambulance has a large range over the metropolitan area and is available by appointment.

Animal Shelter

During operating hours, the hospital provides a shelter for stray and lost animals, especially those animals which are sick or injured. These animals are given whatever veterinary care is required, and every effort is made to find their owner. When it is not possible to reunite a lost animal with its owners, the animal is often put up for adoption where it is desexed, vaccinated, micro chipped and health checked before joining a new family. Some 500 dogs and 1400 cats are placed with new owner each year.
