About us Board Members Ambassadors
Lort Smith Animal Hospital is a non-profit organisation that does not receive Government funding. We rely on bequests, donations, volunteers and veterinary fees to support our work and fund our animal welfare and community programs.
Our History
The original Lort Smith Animal Hospital was established in 1935 by Mrs Louisa Lort Smith, a passionate animal welfare campaigner of the time. Forming part of the Animal Welfare League of Victoria the hospital was developed to promote and improve the welfare of animals and provided veterinary care for animals of people unable to pay veterinary fees.
Our new state of the art hospital, situated on the same site in Villiers Street, North Melbourne, was officially opened in November 2000. It has 8 consulting suites, 4 surgical theatres, a large dental and a small-procedures room, and 16 animal wards including a dedicated intensive care unit and isolation ward.
Who we are
The largest animal hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, our primary role is providing quality veterinary care for over 100,000 lost, abandoned, mistreated, sick and injured animals each year.
We provide care for stray and unwanted animals and our dedicated cattery and kennels reunite or re-home thousands of cats and dogs each year.
Our most recent addition to the hospital is the wildlife and exotic pet unit. The service provides care and expertise and promotes interest and further education in the captive care of these special creatures.
We also believe that the strength of the human/animal bond inevitably means care for the animal must include concern for the person.
Our mission statement
- Providing quality care for lost, abandoned, mistreated, sick and injured animals
- Providing care for animals of people with limited means
- Promoting responsible pet ownership
- Fostering an awareness of animals and the positive impact they have on peoples lives
