Lort Smith - Victorian Bushfire Response

Lort Smith extends its sympathy to all those who are dealing with pain and suffering inflicted by Victorias devastating bush fires. Sadly many animals were lost in the fires and thousands of others were injured.

Lort Smith staff are currently working with State emergency services, other animal welfare agencies and vets to provide aid and assistance for companion animals and wildlife injured in the fires.

As part of our relief program Lort Smith is providing:
• free veterinary treatment to any animal that has been injured by the fires at the hospital and our off-site clinic in Mill Park
• veterinary assistance to local veterinary clinics and local animal rescue centres wherever needed in fire affected areas
• Distribution of dog food, blankets, bowls, leads, etc to well animals that survived the fires but lost everything

We are working with Wildlife Victoria in setting up and staffing triage stations to treat the thousands of kangaroos, koalas and other native wildlife, as well as domestic companion animals that have been injured and we are providing specialised care here at the hospital for any injured animal in need.

If anyone would like to help they can make a donation to our “Bushfire Appeal for Animals”  click DONATE NOW .

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our supporters, we have ceased our call for donations of blankets, food and pet accessories. All items collected and donated are being distributed by our ambulance service, daily.

Please also note that we have closed our call for volunteer foster carers as we now have an extensive list of people wishing to help with this.
